Material Exploration / Product Design

This is my undergraduate thesis project(2012). In this project, I mainly used some materials that are commonly used in architecture but rarely used in industrial design to make some experiment products.

Mountain is a lamp I designed using the material Corian® which is widely used for Kitchen countertop. People usually feel Corian as flat and seamless, while I used 3D twisted surfaces built on straight lines to reveal a different face of this material. I built the 3D shapes and used CNC to make the prototype. I also built a simple LED infrastructure to make it usable.

Rock is a music player I designed using the material concrete. Since concrete is mainly viewed by people on a large scale and volume, it is interesting to apply it to an electronic product that can be held by people’s hands. I modeled and used CNC to create the functional parts and the mold of the concrete housing. I then hand-molded the concrete housing and install all the functional parts to make it work.
